British MPs have warned about “extreme far-right terrorism” saying far-right groups such as the English Defence League (EDL) pose a violent threat.
The Commons Home Affairs Select Committee has published a report calling for more stringent measures to prevent far-right extremists from committing any terror offences.
The report, entitled “Roots of Violent Radicalisation,” maintained that there is a “noticeable gap” in Britain’s strategies aimed at preventing terror offences. While British officials have been indiscriminately exerting pressure on Muslim minorities, far-right extremism has not received due attention.
“We received persuasive evidence about the potential threat from extreme far-right terrorism,” said the report.
Furthermore, the report said that “the ease of travel and communications between countries in Europe and the growth of far-right organisations” have created an “area of risk” which was evidenced by the incident which took place in Norway last year.
An anti-Islam Norwegian man, Anders Behring Breivik, killed 76 people in a bomb and gun attack in the Norwegian capital Oslo and a nearby island last year. Revelations were made about Breivik’s links with the far-right anti-Muslim EDL in Britain.
Just an hour before committing the Massacre, Breivik emailed leaders of right-wing extremists in the UK saying Europe would be “overwhelmed by Islam.”
The report warned against the lack of clear guidelines in the British government’s strategy for preventing right-wing extremism in the UK as it especially called for more action against the EDL.
“[The EDL] gives its followers a specific set of narratives that, under certain conditions, validate the use of violence,” the report said.
